Principal's Welcome
After a busy few weeks with NAPLAN, sporting events and assessments, we have some fantastic events planned in the coming weeks.
The Arts department have their Spirit of Youth concert on Thursday May 27 and the celebration of all things Year 7 - Septofest - is on Friday May 28. We also have the annual Brass Band spectacular on June 12, however will be restricted with our ticket sales due to COVID.
We encourage all parents and students to be active participants in the many great events and opportunities scheduled for upcoming weeks.
News in Brief
Teacher Moderation Days:
We are advising everyone that our remaining 2021 teacher moderation days will be held on Wednesday June 2, Thursday September 2 and Friday November 26. On these days, teachers will meet to review and revise student progress and then collaboratively plan their next student learning experiences. Students will not be required to attend school on these days and, as with COVID last year, any students attending on these days will be supervised, but no new learning will occur. Please read the detailed information about this event later in this newsletter.
Year 6 into 7 Transition information evening:
For new students enrolling in 2022, a repeat of the Year 6 into 7 transition evening which was recently held will be held on Wednesday May 26 starting at 5.30 with a school tour. After the school tour, parents and prospective students will be given information from school staff. Enrolment packs will be distributed to Year 6 students at their own schools by Head of Junior Secondary Kirstie Whybird. These packages contain all information, including interview details and key dates to help every prospective student complete a successful transition to high school.
Septofest:
After postponing the special celebration of being Year 7 - Septofest - we are pleased to invite students, staff, parents and prefects to the 2021 event on May 28.
It's time to polish up those costumes and get ready for a great day of fun. The classes have chosen the following themes for the day...

News from the Deputy's Desk
Welcome to the middle of the term already!
Our students in years 7 and 9 have over the last week and a half undertaken their NAPLAN tests. I want to thank all students and families for their support of our students undertaking these tests. This year was the first time Atherton SHS has undertaken the testing on the online platform, and I can report that this has been more engaging for the students, with only minor hiccups along the way that have not impeded the testing.
Senior students will this week also have their first round of assessment confirmed from QCAA. Individual teachers will work with students if there are any issues with these results.
A reminder to all families that our second moderation day is scheduled for June 4, and once again supervision of students will be provided for those who are not able to stay at home on this day.
There have been lots of activities going on around the school, but the most exciting has to be the addition of baby goats in the Ag department. The students were able to lead these new additions around the school to get them familiar with their surroundings as I look forward to seeing them, and the students, adjust to the school and agriculture department.
Until next time,
Natasha Lyndon
Deputy Principal – Teaching and Learning
Get ready for Septofest Year 7 students!!!
Welcome to Intervention Science Cosmos Kitchen
This week we made Fireball Fried Rice that was scoffed down faster than a fiery meteorite flying across the night sky.
We’ve decided to post our cooking adventures in each newsletter so busy parents, carers and kids can make these easy, nutritious, cheap and super tasty meals … and have enough for school lunches the next day. Next we are making Impossible Pie – it achieves the impossible of many levels. Stay tuned. Now, here is our Fireball Fried Rice.
Ingredients:
2 cups of rice
300 grams bacon shortcuts
2 large carrots
300 g frozen peas and corn
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/3 cup sweet chilli sauce
Method:
No-fail microwave method - microwave the rice in a crockery or glass bowl – 2 cups rice+3 cups water – 20 mins
Dice the bacon and chop carrot (grate if you are busy). Fry till soft. Add peas and corn then soy sauce and chilli sauce.
When all is stirred through, add the rice and stir well.
Playgroup
A group of highly motivated students at Atherton SHS are completing their Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care. This qualification will equip them with the knowledge and skills to work in the early childhood sector.
The playgroup will be run by our students under the supervision of Mrs Nunn, a qualified early childhood teacher. All of the students have a current Blue Card and first aid certificate.
During the one hour session, children will be allowed to play in our custom designed playground and participate in student run activities.
All children from newborn to school age are welcome to come and have some fun.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Tablelands Japanese Camp
Atherton State High School’s year 8, 9 and 10 Japanese students had an exciting opportunity to experience Japanese culture at an overnight camp at Genazzano Retreat on the 14th and 15th May with Malanda State High School students. The students participated in rotational activities such as wearing kimonos, playing traditional Japanese games, origami, calligraphy, making small beanbags and preparing Japanese curry and onigiri (riceballs) for meals. Students were also involved in preparing a video response to a video prepared by students in Japan using their Japanese speaking skills. The camp involved volunteers from the Japanese Tablelands community who demonstrated tea ceremony, traditional sweets tasting, performed the koto, a traditional Japanese instrument and yabusame (horseback archery). Our students thoroughly enjoyed the cultural activities provided by this camp but what made this even more memorable were the friendships made with other students who have an interest in Japan!
Unique Mother's Day gifts
Our students from Atherton State High School HUB had a wonderful opportunity to create some unique Mother’s Day gifts this year during their ART classes. With thanks to Linda Bonadio, who is one of our Teacher Aides and a Milliner, students were taught how to select, design and arrange a variety of materials to make a Floral Arrangement for their mothers and grandmothers. We are grateful to Linda for donating all the materials, including feathers, silk flowers, Sinamay hearts and embellishments. We appreciate her expertise and the patience of our Teacher Aides, working with our students. All the students who took part, thoroughly enjoyed this activity which focussed on making choices, practising fine motor skills, and hand-eye co-ordination. Feedback from parents was an overwhelming thumbs up!
School Dress Code
All students must comply with the uniform expectations. This is a commitment students and parents make when choosing to be part of the Atherton High School family. The local retailers have the everyday uniforms in stock There are also second-hand uniforms available at the school tuckshop. Please ensure that your child has the correct uniform every day. Non-compliance with the school uniform will be followed up with the students and parents.
When they are out in the sun all students must wear a school bucket hat. These hats are available for purchase at the tuckshop for $15.
OR
Wearing the correct school uniform and footwear is a symbol of school pride. It says you are proud to be a member of the Atherton State High school family.
Thank you to those of you who have been supporting our school uniform policy and ensuring your child is coming to school in full school uniform. Unfortunately, not all students are wearing the correct uniform to school. Our policy clearly states that students must wear black leather shoes or black impermeable upper joggers with black laces. (No boots or high tops). This means full black shoes with black soles and no other colour markings.
We seek your co-operation and ask that you ensure your child wears the correct uniform to school. We appreciate that the immediate purchase of some items may place a burden on the family budget for some families. However, we are requesting that, wherever possible, all students wear our uniform proudly. Should you be experiencing difficulty with this request, please contact the school as we may be able assist you.
How to report student absences
Please note we have a new Student Absence Mobile number - 0426 305 138. You can send a message to this mobile number at any time, when your child/ren are absent from school. Please provide the following information in the message - Student Name, Year Level, Reason for absence and length of time for absence.
Thank you for all you do to help!!
This week we celebrate the Volunteers that help the students and staff at Atherton State High School. There are too many to mention by name but they provide help in the Homework Club, Breakfast Club, Tuckshop, administration tasks and in the classrooms!
Bill and Gwen Thomas have volunteered at Breakfast Club at the High School for 9 years! For 9 years they have cooked and served a healthy breakfast, with love, to our students. Thank you Bill and Gwen, we appreciate you this week and every week!
Spirit of Youth Concert
On Thursday night the 27th of May the Atherton State High School hall will come alive with lights, sound and best of all MUSIC!
“Spirit of Youth” is an annual concert put on by Atherton State High School music students as a way of showcasing their talent and hard work to their peers, parents and members of the community.
This extra curricula concert is a celebration of student involvement and development in the music program at ASHS. All performances are prepared in classes by the students, for the students.
Spirit of Youth has been a long held tradition here at Atherton High School for over 15 years. It is an invaluable opportunity for students to develop their performance abilities by organising their own acts, putting in countless hours of rehearsal time and finally performing in front of a live audience. This gives students a very rare opportunity to develop their musical skills in a real life performance scenario.
Year after year performers, students, parents and members of the community are inspired and impressed by the level of talent and professionalism shown by ASHS students throughout the concert.
Atherton State High School will be presenting the annual “Spirit of Youth Concert” on Thursday 27th of May starting at 6:30 pm in the Atherton State High School Community Hall.
