Principal's Welcome
Dear students, parents and community members, I trust this newsletter update finds you well! As we draw near the end of term one, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for a wonderful term at this amazing school! I am thoroughly enjoying my role as Principal in this fine school and have had the pleasure of witnessing first-hand the many, many amazing things that happen here.
Parents and Citizen Association - I have had the pleasure of working with many dedicated parents/carers through our outgoing and incoming Parents and Citizen association. We welcome our 2023 P&C – Paul Le'Gear, Lois Nehow, Nicky Keevers and Michael Durrand and thank the outgoing P&C for their dedication to our school Andrew Dennis, Jorg Edsen, Meg Stansfield and Larissa Kruck.
Break times for Term 2 – In response to feedback from students, staff and parents we will be extending the first lunch break to 40 minutes, there was an overwhelming desire from all parties to change the 2 x 30 minute breaks. We truly value your opinions and will always do the best thing for our school community in response to strong feedback if it is at all possible. We run many, many outstanding clubs during our lunch breaks and it is also important to provide ample time for staff and students to refresh and nourish during break times. In response to this the daily structure beginning term 2 will be:
Facilities update – We are currently in strong consultation with Regional office in regards to our student amenities upgrade. We have now approved the design brief and hopefully this will progress to tender stage soon. This is an extremely substantial upgrade providing outstanding bathroom facilities for our students. We are hoping this work will start in the second half of this year!
Welcome to year 6 students and their families – It was so wonderful meeting many new families who attended our Welcome school tour. A large team of staff and students proudly showed off our fabulous school to new students and families. Mrs Adrienne Telford has been employed by our school to help with the smooth transition of our Atherton community primary school students into our amazing high school. Many events throughout the year have been organised to help students transition from primary to high school seamlessly, we want our students to feel very comfortable and confident from day 1 of Year 7.
We value your feedback! – Thank you so much to the many families who recently completed our Parent Pulse survey for term 1. I am truly driven to continuously improve this school and feedback from our parents/carers, students and staff is crucial, we want to hear what you think is great and what you think needs improvement, together we can make this school EXTRAORDINARY!! We will be sending out pulse surveys each term as these provide vital information for our next steps and also help us to measure how we are going towards meeting our Annual Implementation Plan measures. We certainly have some wonderful things to celebrate from our recent survey and for those who took the time to write suggestions and or comments I enjoyed reading every single one of them, thank you!! In comparison to the school opinion survey results from last year we have already seen some great improvements, we certainly have a long way to go, but results such as these show us that we are on the right journey and we are doing the right work.
- Student behaviour is well managed at this school 19.8 % improvement
- Teachers at this school are interested in my child’s wellbeing 14.2 % improvement

From the Deputy's Desk - Senior School
Congratulations to all our senior students for your success in term 1. At the senior induction ceremony earlier in the term, Year 12 students pledged to unite to support each other and the school as a whole. We have seen his in action this term, with these students role modelling positive and respectful behaviours and stepping in to encourage younger students to do the same. Year 11s have been working solidly, showing dedication and engagement in their studies and other commitments. Year 10s also demonstrated their investment in their current learning and future pathways with a great turnout of parents and students attending the QCE information night earlier this week. Our major behaviours have been minimal this term, showing that out seniors cohorts are set up well to start term 2 positively and purposefully, after a well-earned rest of course.
Our teachers have also been investing in their own continual development to support student outcomes. This term, we have begun our implantation of evidence-based high impact teaching strategies, starting with consistent entry routines that help students to settle into learning mode and be organised for success. We have also been getting to know the new Australian Curriculum version 9, so that we can make informed implementation decisions that take into account our student and community needs and context.
I wish you all a happy break with your families, and look forward to working with you again in term 2.

Term 1 has been very busy in the junior school with NAPLAN running over 2 weeks in March. I am exceptionally proud of the resilience shown by Atherton State High School’s students to get through this testing period as well as keeping up with their normal classes. NAPLAN results should be out later in the year.
Year 7’s were this year again, involved in SEPTOFEST which is unique to Atherton State High School. The day involved team building and leadership activities and culminates as per tradition in the ‘Sid Shuffle.’ It was great to see all of our year 7’s out of their classroom environment and interacting together as a strong cohesive group.
On Monday March 27 Atherton State High School hosted future students and their carers for a school tour. Participants got to here from curriculum heads of departments and tour the school and literally sit where they will have classes in the future. The next transition event will be transition day/s mid next term.
Enrolment at Atherton State High School
If you are wanting to enrol a student at Atherton State High School for 2024 then please complete an enrolment pack. These can be collected from the school office or accessed from the school website.
Once your enrolment paperwork is filled in, you will need to complete an enrolment session at the school. We are conducting these interviews towards the end of next term, and this will be advertised then.
Immunisation program for Year 7 and Year 10 students
Our school is participating in Queensland Health’s annual School Immunisation Program. All Year 7 and Year 10 students will be offered free vaccinations as recommended on the National Immunisation Program schedule to protect against vaccine preventable diseases. Year 7 students will be offered human papillomavirus (HPV) and diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough). Year 10 students will be offered meningococcal ACWY vaccination.
The first immunisation session was held on March 14. It’s not too late to participate as catch up sessions are held throughout the year.
Vaccines offered in the Queensland School Immunisation Program
School Year | Vaccine | Dose and administration |
Year 7 | Human papillomavirus (HPV) | Two doses of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine GARDASIL®9 will be offered. The recommended interval for the two doses is 0 and (at least) 6 months but up to 12 months after first dose. |
Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (dTpa) | One booster dose of adult/adolescent formulation dTpa vaccine will be offered. Most students would have received vaccination against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis when they were pre-school age.
Year 10 | Meningococcal ACWY | One dose of meningococcal ACWY vaccine will be offered. |
PBL Update
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school framework that promotes positive behaviour across a school and helps schools develop safe and supportive learning environments.
Schools which implement the PBL framework make sure all students are explicitly taught the expected behaviours and establish clear and consistent boundaries. Staff take a proactive, preventative approach to ensure all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to be successful at school.
At Atherton State High School we frame our school expected behaviours around Four school values of RESPECT, RESPONSIBLE, SUCCESSFUL and SAFE.
The PBL team meets fortnightly and reviews behaviour data and sets the value for the week which is discussed across our school by teaching staff members. The team now also has 2 parent representatives.
The value for the week in weeks 9 and 10 are:
Week 9- We are respectful- We show courtesy and consideration for others, their property and school environment.
Week 10- We are responsible- We show pride in our school and represent it positively.
These are posted on our school facebook page and on our school sign. Please feel free to discuss these values with your student if the opportunity should arise.
The team are working on a new positive acknowledgement system that involves “thank-you” tickets handed out when students are demonstrating the expected behaviours. This will be launched next term and students will place their tickets in weekly draw boxes to win tuckshop vouchers.

News from Junior Secondary
Year 7 Transition
Our year 7 students have had a very strong and positive transition in to their high school education. The first day students settled in well getting to know their timetable and meeting their class mates and teachers for the first time. In week 1 students participated in team building games and technology based activities that encouraged team work and problem-solving. The activities encouraged a focus on communication and working collaboratively with one task requiring students to build a tower using spaghetti straws and marshmallows. The only requirement was the tower needed to be able to stand independently. A number of groups demonstrated some great skills around the understanding of forces and produced some exceptional towers.
Lunchtime Activities
Friday 10th March year 7 students had the opportunity to participate in a duster hockey competition. Whilst there was a small turnout the collaboration between senior prefects and year 7 students was fun to watch. All who participated had a great time and got way more physical activity then they initially bargained for. The year 7 students showed off their bat and ball skills remarkably well and even managed to get a few past the “big kids”. A big thank you to our senior students who demonstrated a great school culture and spirit to make our new year 7 students feel welcome.
Pancake Friday
Friday the 24th March year 12 and year 7 students had the opportunity to grab a pancake and formally meet each other. Junior students shared how they were feeling at this point in their high school education and seniors provided some great words of wisdom in support. A great turn out by our seniors and juniors demonstrated a positive feel and collaboration. It was wonderful to see that there were no barriers and students were enjoying the opportunity to support each other.
More activities are currently in the planning or term 2. Strong indication for a dance off between seniors and juniors is gaining popularity. Please watch this space and the school facebook page for dates and times.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN testing is now complete for 2023. A big thank you to all students for their participation and punctuality to testing sessions in the computer labs. Students were engaged and respectful of the process. A special thank you to all staff to ensure students were on time and there was a relatively seamless delivery throughout the testing window.
Septofest
A celebration of commencing year 7 will be on tomorrow Tuesday 28th March. All year 7 students will be attending in their class theme and participating in team building activities for the day. Photos of the day and feedback from the event will be reported on next term. Please keep an eye out for the schools facebook page for photos posted on the day.
Welcome to the Mathematics Faculty
Our Mathematics faculty at Atherton State High School also includes Aerospace and Aviation as part of our faculty.
We cover the vast majority of students in all year levels at the school.
Our Year 7 students are rounding off a very busy term after doing integers, perimeter and area and probability. Next term we do fractions, statistics and geometry (angles). Well done to most of the year 7 students on achieving in mathematics.
Our Year 8 students have transitioned from Year 7 math into year 8 math quite well. They have covered number and place value along with algebra and a bit of geometry.
Year 9 have been studying probability and statistics. They will be doing index laws, expanding binomial expressions and simple interest next term.
Year 10 students continue on their journey in math having studied algebraic fractions, factorising monic quadratics along with solving equations and compound interest. Next term we’ll be studying, statistics, probability, volume and surface area.
Our senior students are busy completing unit 1 and unit 3 with assessments next term.
Our assessment in Years 7 – 10 is around collecting evidence of student learning. While some of it is exam-based and problem solving and modelling tasks, we collect student work throughout the term as evidence of student learning. If students do miss an assessment item we will usually have collected other evidence for reporting.
We have events coming up later this year. Our Year 7/8 Mathematics quiz for the Tablelands schools will be hosted at Atherton SHS in August. We will be starting trials for Year 7 and 8 students interested in representing the school for this quiz next term The Year 9 Math Camp will be on in September (last week of Term 3). Please have your child to talk to their teacher about these events.
We offer mathematical tutoring on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon after school from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. We cater for all year levels and students are welcome to attend when required.
If there are any enquiries about any of the information in this article please contact me on my school email at amcco43@eq.edu.au .

Atherton Police Station Visit
Students from ASHS HUB visited the Atherton Police Station as part of our Community Access Program. Sergeant Winifred Weiss welcomed us and spoke to the students about the role of a Police Officer. Excited students were given a tour of the station, including the Communications Room, the Interview Rooms and the Watch House. We checked out the Police vehicles and a couple of lucky students were breathalysed, and handcuffed! The highlight of our visit was having our finger prints taken! Students really enjoyed their time at the Atherton Police Station and extend special thanks to Sergeant Weiss for allowing us to visit.

Year 12 General Music Compositions
Year 12 General Music students have been hard at work experimenting with compositional techniques as a part of their “Innovations” unit. They have been exploring innovative uses of duration (time signature) and pitch (chord progressions) and unconventional ways to develop music. They will use these skills and techniques in the development of their IA2 compositions next term. It is clear that we have some very talented composers at Atherton State High School- well done!

Library News
Volume 1, March 2023
We are in the magnificent 2023, and there is already so much to look forward to. Over the past 4 weeks champion teachers have restarted many of their clubs and after school extra-curricular activities. It’s great to see inspiring community members giving up their time to create opportunities for students to study, create, share and harmonise in peaceful and supportive spaces around the school grounds. Clubs range from working with animals, building, performing, studying and solving with digital technology. If your child/ren are interested in joining one or many of the clubs, simply contact the champion teacher and enrol. Posters are scattered all throughout the school and the Library for times and updates.
Below is the schedule for Semester 1 and highlights will soon to follow.
From the Circulation Desk
The library has been incredibly busy turning out this year’s Student Resources Scheme (SRS). Over 1,527 student book hire textbooks in total have been processed and loaned out to all SRS participants ensuring each student has access to all required resources for optimum curriculum engagement.
If you require any further information about the 2023 Student Resource Scheme including how the scheme operates and annual participation fees, contact the Business Manager on 40305210 or email bsm@athertonshs.eq.edu.au
Lastly, look out for Library overdue reminder emails every Wednesday for your convenience.
New Library Hours
As we have started a new whole school timetable so has the Library. Library opening hours are as follows:
Open Mic Friday’s @ The Library, Week 8
The Library along with Mrs Taske and Yr.12 student Imogen Kelly would like to invite all students and staff to our bi-term OPEN MIC SESSIONS, held in the Library, Friday Recess 2.
This is a great opportunity for students to perform and share their talents with a live audience. Staff and students are invited to showcase their talents in singing, stand up and performances for all to enjoy.
It’s also a great way to wind down the week and have a fun and relaxing Friday arvo in the company of entertaining and joyful people.
Our first Open Mic session is Friday, Week 8, Recess 2. Simply write your name down on the sign-up sheet located in the Library foyer.
Aviation Club at Atherton High
An Aviation Club is available to our students on Friday, Recess 1 in Room C017 (The Aviation Centre). This is the room set up for Atherton High’s Aerospace Systems subject and the Certificate III in Aviation (Remote Pilot) course offered to our senior students.
Aviation Club is open to all year levels. The main focus of the club is the use of the Flight Simulators which includes fully functioning aircraft controls and we are now exploring Virtual Reality (VR). The students also get to fly the Tello drones!
And some special news…we now have access to a fully certified Flight Simulator control panel that will allow students to take real steps towards gaining their pilot’s licence. This system will be set up in the near future.

Polished Portions – Year 9 and 11 English
For the first segment of term 1, year 9 and 11 students have been learning how to build suspense and engage readers of a narrative. Year 9s have had the task of crafting a speculative short story. The excerpts that follow represent a ‘Polished Portion’ of some stories from our classes.
The following story excerpts are from pieces about a giant spider and ruined cities full of wolves and human-sized cockroaches.
Year 11s have been similarly tasked with creating a narrative, the only difference being they are to base their story off a World War I poem. The snippets that follow are from three stories that capture perspectives about soldiers at war, as well as family members left on the home front.
I can't wait to read their final polished pieces. - Miss Godfrey
Westpac Bank Visit
Students from ASHS HUB visited WESTPAC Bank as part of our Community Access Program. The Manager of WESTPAC, Kate, explained about the difference services offered by the bank, including opening a bank account. We saw the tellers helping customers and learned about the large bank safe that stores money, as well as what qualities you need to work in a bank. We really enjoyed our time at WESTPAC Bank and our lucky students were treated to a backpack full of goodies. Special thanks to Wendy for organising this visit for us.
Minecraft Edu Club
Minecraft Education Club is hosted by Mrs Stevens and Mr Gray every Thursday during recess one and two. Minecraft Education provides a safe environment for students to create, play, and collaborate with their friends. Students can build cities, shape landscapes, cultivate crops, care for animals and much more. At Minecraft Education Club students are free to explore their own interests within an unlimited sandbox world. The teacher's role is to facilitate access to the technology and ensure students are playing respectfully, responsibly and safely. Due to the popularity of Minecraft Education Club, it is currently only offered to year 7 students.
Japanese Study Tour
On Wednesday March 22nd Atherton SHS hosted their first Japanese school visit since the borders closed during the pandemic. The schools were Matsuyama Higashi High School and Uwajima Minami Secondary School from Shikoku island in Japan. There were 25 students and three teachers visiting for the day. The visiting students really enjoyed interacting with their Atherton High School buddies. Many new friendships were made. Atherton SHS is reviving the International Study Tours program. We look forward to more visits later in the year.
Drama in Term 1
In term 1, Drama students at Atherton High have focused on the 21st century skills: creative thinking, collaboration & inclusion of ICT to enhance their performances. In addition to their study of stage acting, students have obtained knowledge in technologies which have allowed them opportunities to incorporate media and lighting effects into their acts. Some of these phenomenal works will be showcased at the Art’s Open Night this year in term 4.
Sports Report
School sport in 2023 has started off as chaotic as ever. With such a wide variety of sporting opportunities available for students, Atherton State High School students have been making the most of their opportunities. Many of our students have been competing extremely well, with multiple students being selected in Peninsula School Sport Teams, tirelessly preparing for the QLD School Sport State Championships in their selected sports. One of our most recent highlights is our very own Eacham Echidnas House Captain Amy Hunter. Amy; along with fellow house captain Talytha MacDonald, travelled to Rockhampton during Week 8 for the QLD u19’s Women’s Cricket State Championship. Throughout this championship Amy captained the Sunshine Coast Region and earnt herself selection in the QLD u19’s Women’s Cricket State Team. Both students played exceptionally well and are to be commended for their efforts and achievements, congratulations ladies!
This term we have had students participating in a variety of cluster days and afterschool trials, with many students earning their way into the QLD School Sport Pathway. These students spent time outside of school training with their respective teams in preparation for the Peninsula Regional Carnivals where they had the opportunity to be selected in a Peninsula Regional Team.
Being involved in a variety of sports carnivals, it has been evident to me the way in which our ASHS Students behave and uphold themselves. It has been brilliant to see the level of participation and competition from such a large number of ASHS students. Our ASHS students are to be commended for their attitude and sportsmanship at these events, where all students have competed in a hard, yet fair manner, congratulations students!
In the school sport space, we have seen a combination of our Year 7/8 and 9/10 girls participating in the Karyn Murphy Cup Rugby League Competition. The KMC Cup aims to increase girl’s participation in Rugby League and provides students a pathway into girls footy and it has been great to see the level of support for these students and their supreme level of competitiveness. The girls edged out Malanda SHS in round one followed by a thumping victory of 13-6 against Innisfail SC in round two, earning them a position in the Cairns District Gala Day on Wednesday March 29, well done Girls! We have also seen the first introduction of House Challenge Inter-House competition. The House Challenge; although a competition, focusses on house spirit and student participation. Our first ever event was a fun run in preparation for Cross Country next term, which saw the Eacham Echidnas storm home with a total of 579 laps of the Hall! Great job to Eacham House Captains Amy and Emily for driving the house spirit with your team, great job everyone!
Although a large majority of school sport pathway opportunities have already been completed so far this term, the opportunities for students to participate in sport doesn’t end there. Coming up throughout Term 2 we have multiple opportunities available, including two of our inter-House Carnivals; Cross Country occurring at the Tinaburra Avenue of Honour on April 20 (Week 1), and Athletics on the 22nd and 23rd of June (Week 10). Throughout Term 2 we have many other school sport opportunities available to students. ASHS has nominated a Senior Boys and our reigning NQ Champions, our Senior Girls team for the Street Smarts T20 Cricket Competition to get underway in May. Hoping to go back to back in 2023, our senior Girls team comprised of students from year 7-12 are eager. Term 2 also sees the introduction of the Vicky Wilson Netball Carnival in Cairns, providing competitive netball opportunities for both Male and Female students. Term 2 is looking great so far and will provide a variety of opportunities for our students to succeed in the sporting arena. We are all sure our ASHS students will continue to represent the school in the proud manner they have been, with sporting achievements continuing to climb throughout Term 2.

ATIM Music Camp
On Friday the 10th and Saturday the 11th of March the instrumental music students of Atherton High were involved in an overnight reading camp. On Friday morning students gathered to begin what proved to be a very successful and musically challenging two days. We worked in instrument specific sections, individually as well as a whole group.
Students worked intensively through the day and played games, watched movies and ate pizza at night until we all collapsed. The students definitely rose to the occasion and we are looking forward to showing off at some of our up and coming performances. The purpose of our reading camp wasn’t just to rehearse as a group but also to get to know each other and learn how to be a team representative of all high school age groups which often proves to be tricky.
I must publicly thank Mrs Taske, Mr Pluschke, Mr Nunn and Mr and Mrs Lawrence who helped literally tirelessly through the evening and into the morning with food preparation and managing 45 excited musicians.
All students conducted themselves professionally during workshops and rehearsals and were respectful to staff, parents and each other. It was wonderful to see students all ages getting along and working together.

Cultural Connections Edition 5
The Kit Kat Club
The Kit Kat Club is up and running and students will get started properly Mondays, Recess 2 from Term 2 onwards. It is open for all students across all grades and students need to come along to sign up if they want to join. The club's name is a bit of a play on the Kit Kat ad, where we have a break during recess and build a model kit. We will be building plastic model kits of all kinds of things, cars, tanks and planes being the main themes. All materials are provided, along with close supervision to help the students construct their kits. Model kits were very popular for many decades but with the advent of newer technologies such as game consoles they can be harder to find nowadays. They are an excellent higher-order thinking activity, with students needing to practice their problem-solving skills, follow the instructions carefully and have patience in order for them to succeed. Finished models will be displayed for other students to look at in the library.
Certificate III in Early Childhood
If you would like to join our Playgroup please come along!
This playgroup happens during the school term only.
Bring your little one to join in the fun at our Atherton SHS Playgroup. Contact Ms Collins if you have any questions on 4030 5222

Link and Launch
Research tells us that every year a number of young people who complete Year 12 are not engaged in education, employment or training in the year after they leave school. While there are numerous programs and services available to students completing Year 12 to help them transition from school, data indicates that some of the young people who need this help the most, do not access it.
The Queensland Government is funding Link and Launch to support these young people to navigate their post-school options and to choose a pathway that will equip them to make a successful transition to study, training or work.
How the program works
Link and Launch officers are based at participating schools to connect with young people who have completed Year 12 but not yet transitioned to further study, training or work. These officers can assist young people to navigate a range of post-school study, training and work options in line with their individual goals, aspirations, skills and strengths and support them to make independent choices that will equip them to make a successful transition.
Participating schools
In 2023, the Link and Launch Program will be delivered in 36 schools located in areas where there are high numbers of school leavers who are not in education, employment or training. I am pleased to announce that the Atherton Tablelands now has a Link and Launch service.
