After many years of production of our newsletter using print and booklet formats, we have made the decision to publish information to our community through a completely online format.
We trust that you enjoy the new format and reading about the successes of our staff, students and community members!
News in Brief
Year 7 Immunisation Day:
Year 7 students will complete the Department of Health’s School Immunisation Program this Tuesday providing consent forms are completed and returned. For more information on the school immunisation program please read the information on the QLD Health Department website.
Sports events:
The sports calendar has been sent out previously. Students receive details of sports trials via student notices, parades and email. If you have any questions about representing the school in a sporting team, please see Ms Maryanne Cortis in the International room (C28—lower C block). If you have any questions, please email them to Maryanne on mcort10@eq.edu.au. Please see sports report below for more information.
Teacher Moderation Days:
After extensive consultation with our community last year, we are advising everyone that our 2021 teacher moderation days will be held on Tuesday March 23, Wednesday June 2, Thursday September 2 and Friday November 26. On these days, teachers will meet to review and revise student progress and then collaboratively plan their next student learning experiences. Students will not be required to attend school on these days and, as with COVID last year, any students attending on these days will be supervised, but no new learning will occur. Please read the detailed information about this event later in this newsletter.
National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence:
Join with the Student Council on March 19 to deliver the message that bullying and violence at school are not acceptable at any time. Wear orange to the free dress day , bring a gold coin to donate and sign the pledge against bullying and violence!
From the Deputy’s Desk…
What a term this one is shaping up to be! Over the last few weeks the Teaching and Learning team members have been full steam ahead. We have welcomed our new and beginning staff to the school in our first mentoring ‘speed dating’ session which was a very successful way of having our new staff meet with the experienced staff on site.
Apart from this, teachers have been preparing all students for their first summative items of assessment and over the next few weeks, a lot of the junior students in the school will be busy putting final touches on their first assessment items for the year. Our year 12s have already submitted, or are undertaking their first internal assessment or exams. Their results will be submitted to the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority for confirmation. What is this? Well, confirmation is an annual quality assurance process for General subjects that occurs twice a year. Once in term one, the other in term three. This process examines the accuracy and consistency of teachers’ judgments about students’ responses to summative internal assessment instruments. This is, in essence, to ensure comparability of results across Queensland and aims to ensure fair and reliable results for students. No doubt you can clearly see why the school has planned for the Teacher Moderation Day on March 23rd to ensure not only year 12 results, but those across the whole school are quality assured.
But why is a moderation day needed? The moderation process is not a simple one, especially when applying it to all year levels, and at our school moves through four phases: Before, After, After, End. The process in more detail includes
- Before – where assessment standards are broken down and a common understanding of teaching and learning skills and processes is discussed, planned and enacted by classroom teachers.
- After – an informal checkpoint after teaching has commenced and evidence of student learning has started being collected.
- After – occurs after students have submitted summative assessment that will count towards their final results. Teachers will undertake many activities to ensure accuracy in the awarding of results and matching evidence presented in student work to expected standards.
- End – comparing student summative assessment results and awarding final results accurately, as well as interrogating data to ensure that teaching and learning is always improving.
In the past, we have asked teachers to come off classes in order to complete this process, meaning teaching and learning time is lost throughout the term. By having these activities occur one day per term, we are hoping to eliminate the need for teachers to be off classes as much as possible, so they are able to do what they do best - teach.
Since the last newsletter, I have once again had the privilege to visit classrooms, as well as witness some of the incursions that have been taking place; it is always a pleasure to see engaged students and teachers in their element.
Students playing card games in Science to learn about chromosomes, students undertaking the beep test in PE and the art classes using various stimuli to create a folio of work – what great teaching and learning is going on!

P&C AGM and General Meeting:
The Atherton SHS Parents and Citizen’s Association Meeting are held on the second Tuesdays of the month. Everyone is welcome to become a member of the P&C - Please email PandC@athertonshs.eq.edu.au to inquire about becoming a member. At the February AGM we elected the 2021 executive - congratulations to President: Andrew Dennis; Vice President Jorg Edsen; Secretaries Meg Stansfield and Larissa Kruck and Treasurer Nikki Keevers. We wish them the very best in their roles this year as they represent the parent body at Atherton SHS.
Thank you to these dedicated parents who work with school staff and provide advocacy on behalf of the parent body.
Our P&C meets at 7pm the second Tuesday of every month and we encourage all interested parents and community members to attend either in person or virtually via Zoom. Hope to see you at the meetings!
Parent Reps on School Council
Thank you to the parents who have nominated to be on our School Council. The School Council is our committee that brings staff, student and parents together to monitor and advise on strategic matters.
This year we have David Kilpatrick, Christina Silva and Ven LaSpina representing parents on our school's strategic body. This year David will be the school council chair.
They join in with the three staff members Katina Davis, Maryanne Cortis and Jaelene Durrand and student representatives Ethan Cumming, Shi-Anne Wallace and Marni Dennis. The final two members are the P&C President Andrew Dennis and Principal Tony Whybird.
Teacher Moderation Day
In 2020 we ran consultations with P&C and the school council to get approval to trial teacher moderation days so that we can ensure that teachers are providing the best possible education for every student. By providing time for teachers to meet together to review, revise, monitor student progress and plan future student learning experiences, we will increase their ability to positively affect student outcomes (known as Collective Teacher Efficacy). This trial is being done to support teachers to ensure that every student is successful at Atherton SHS.
Details of moderation days:
When – 1 day per term
- Tuesday March 23
- Wednesday June 2
- Thursday September 2
- Friday November 26
Who
- On these days no new work will be taught at Atherton SHS and students will only be supervised if they attend. Similar to when we had learning from home during the COVID pandemic, we are asking that only those students who have no alternative arrangements attend school on this day. Students who do attend will be supervised by supply teachers and other staff whilst teachers complete moderation activities.
What
- Teachers and leaders have been ‘banking’ non-contact time and will ‘pay back’ the time on this day. They will collaboratively meet in teams to review student progress and prepare for future learning experiences for their classes. In previous years this had led to major disruptions to teaching and learning operations, the moderation days allow for staff to complete their work without removing them from their classes.
- Students will be able to use the time to independently complete work set by teachers, to consolidate their learning or complete scheduled assessment tasks at home. Students who physically attend will complete similar work under supervision.
Why
- Research indicates that the biggest gains in student achievement are made when Collective Teacher Efficacy occurs. This involves teachers working together to have appropriately highly challenging expectations of what student growth over time looks like. We are operationalising this through the use of moderation cycles, which depend on teams of teachers being able to meet without disrupting our normal teaching and learning operations.
- Our parents and school council have supported the trial of the moderation days to improve our classroom practices, increase staff capability and make our school better for our students. We will review the trial throughout the year.
How
- Students who can stay at home and complete learning activities are encouraged to do so.
- Students unable to stay at home will have normal practices occurring in relation to their arrival (e.g. buses will run as normal) and supervision, but no new work will be taught on this day.
- Student rolls will be marked for students who are in attendance. Parents of all students not in physical attendance will be sent a notification SMS to mobile phones to confirm arrangements.
After months of planning and preparation for these days, we look forward to our first trial day so that we can measure the benefits for both staff and students.
Update from the Student Council
The student council has been very busy over the last 6 weeks with fundraising and with organising upcoming events to keep us all occupied throughout the year. In term 2, Jess Stevens, in partnership with the Hub will be holding an autism awareness day which will yet be further announced when we have more information. The student council will be purchasing a notice board which will be placed on the female toilet side of A block. We will also be purchasing the legacy bench which the 2020 student council executive planned for and we will fulfill their legacy. We are wanting everyone to come along and join our student council meetings, every second Wednesday. Please come along and share your ideas so we can make this a year to remember.
Positive Behaviour for Learning Update
Over the past few weeks, Atherton State High School’s PBL implementation has been rolled out across all year levels at the school. Students, staff and visitors have commented on the new practices that staff are implementing and observing, particularly
- School values posters being placed in all learning areas across the school.
- School values signs being erected onto buildings, and
- The first stages of the Atherton State High School student reward system being implemented.
Atherton State High School’s positive reward system has been introduced this term, with the aim to acknowledge the positive behaviours and efforts of our students aligned with our schools values of Respect, Responsibility and Success. We are recognising positive student behaviour and efforts with:
- Atherton High Flyer Tickets – students are awarded a High Flyer ticket by their classroom teacher and/or other staff to acknowledge their positive behaviours and efforts. Students then place these tickets into boxes outside the Positive Behaviour Specialist room to go into a draw to win a $10 tuckshop voucher on full school parades. Our first recipients of the $10 tuckshop vouchers in Week 5 were:
- Sunny (Year 7)
- Taylah (Year 8)
- Michaela (Year 9)
- Imogen (Year 10)
- Elizabeth (Year 11)
- Taylor (Year 12)
- Positive Postcards – each week a faculty will hand write Positive Postcards to send home to parents and carers to acknowledge the positive contributions that their child has made. Teachers have been writing postcards for at least one outstanding students from each of their classes.
- Term 1 100% Attendance Pizza Party – students with 100% attendance for Term 1 will be invited to a pizza party in their PBL lesson in Week 10.
There are many more exciting times ahead as we focus on the implementation of Positive Behaviour for learning at Atherton State High School.
Chess Club Returns!
Chess Club Returns! Following on from the successes of Bianca and Sara Banks at the first inter-school tournament of the year, Chess Club has returned to our school! Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced player, you are invited to come along to H002 at Recess 1 each Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Mrs Stevens, Mr Gray, Mr Ebdon and Mrs Draper will be available to teach, guide and learn along with you. Challenge yourself in a fun environment, and learn to think tactically and strategically.
Fun Fact: Chess has been around in its current form since the 15th century! Earlier versions date back to 900 years before that.
State Honours Ensemble Program
Last weekend 12 of our finest musicians attended the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) in Cairns. The Far North Queensland program enables students to work with internationally acclaimed instrumentalists as their conductors. In addition they participated in a band made up of hand-picked Queensland Instrumental Music students. During the program, the young musicians had the chance to receive one-on-one and group feedback during the three day sessions. The students had the opportunity to work together in Brass Bands, Big Bands and Concert Band settings, where they later showcased their new pieces to peers and parents. The participating students were Ethan, Brendan, Emmy, Bianca, Tilly, Jonathon, Sasha, Lily, Lauren, Charlotte, Marni and Jean (absent from photo)
Social Media – False Facebook Faces
The Year 11A Social and Community Studies class have been exploring:
- How “lame” society has become – focussing on false heroism because of our excessive use of social media.
- The issue is: have we become so mobile phone blind that we do not see the true heroes around us anymore?
We ask ourselves: Do we even know what a true hero is?
We came to a clear conclusion – all of the above is – sadly – so true!
To demonstrate this: Two Facebook Faces – which one is the hero?
Mr Ashley Cupitt was invited to our class to share the honour bestowed upon him as recipient of “The Order of Australia” (2020) that recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service worthy of particular recognition. We were astonished at all the years of service he had rendered in his colourful career and understand why he is a worthy recipient of the award.
He shared his personal experiences with the class and mentioned his expertise in the Queensland Fire & Emergency Services and showed us his pager, as he is “on call” 24 hours. He referred to his decorated career as a boxer since the 1975s, a firefighter (1976-1985) and his position in the Australian Army Reserves, to name but a few.
Mr Cupitt commented on his perception of how the younger generation has changed over the years and gave us good advice: “You are never too young to volunteer.” He had started his career at a very vulnerable age of sixteen and has no plans to retire!
The class thanked him and Louise, his lovely partner, for giving their time to enrich ours!

Finance update
Dear Parents/Carers/Guardians,
Student Resource Scheme 2021
- The objective of the scheme is to provide a convenient and cost-effective way for students to access the educational resources necessary to enhance their learning experience at school.
- Savings are gained through the school’s bulk purchasing practices and hiring arrangements.
- The scheme is not used to raise funds for other purposes, and revenue and is applied only to the resources and operation of the scheme.
- Parents who choose not to participate in the SRS are responsible for providing their student with all items that would otherwise be provided by the SRS to enable their student to engage with the curriculum.
- A parent can opt in or out of the scheme by completing another Participation Agreement Form.
- Participation is now for the duration of your child’s enrolment at the school.
- Please return Student Resource Scheme forms as soon as possible and before the end of Term.
All 2021 Student Resource Scheme levies have been invoiced. Subject fees are currently being invoiced.
Please remember Certificate Courses for 2021 are to be paid up front as these fees are paid directly to a third party provider.
All 2021 fees are required to be paid by the end of Term 1 or as per your arrangements made with the school. Please ensure all fees are paid in full, or a payment agreement in place with the school in order for students to receive resources. Parents experiencing financial hardship who are currently participating in, or wish to participate in the SRS, should contact the school to discuss options.

What a load of rot in the Hub!
HUB rot
The Hub is full of rot. Years 7, 8 and 9 are studying decomposition and how a big pile of waste like compost is actually very valuable. It is a hive of activity as it breaks down, becomes soil and is used to fertilise our garden.
Mr Fraser’s classes are conducting a compost experiment that compares compost that is stirred with compost that is left unstirred. We will keep you updated with these exciting results.
Ms Titasey’s classes are comparing how different types of bread decompose. We are comparing Ms Titasey’s homemade bread, store-bought white bread and fruit bread. After four weeks, we have the most delightful furry mould covering the slices.
Wait, there is more. If you are in the market for a snow globe for your desk or a gift, go for something more sophisticated and make a Compost Globe. You’ll be doing the environment a favour when you recycle, reuse and reduce with the material.
If you’ve ever thought art and compost don’t mix, think again. This week, Ms Titasey’s class made puffy paint world paintings. Puffy paint is made from flour, baking powder and food colouring and when microwaved, rises like a loaf of the finest bread. The worlds were painted on recycled Braille cardboard that was destined for the shredder before being rescued for our canvases. The best part? The left over paint was simply tossed into the compost, not down the sink, to enter the wonderful cycle of rot and regeneration.

The Health faculty has been learning in, about and through physical activity, across a range of both practical and theoretical components this term. Staff and students have been participating in richly engaging and rewarding content that has hopefully fostered a life-long love of physical activity and good health. The ASHS HPE week went off with a bang during national HPE week in week 6! It was great to see so many staff and students attending the lunch time events and being active. There were prizes awarded for the winners of each event, and major prizes for the overall HPE week winners. Well done to everyone who had a go, but particularly Shelby and Doug who were the most consistent female and male competitors throughout the week. The Health staff can also hold their heads high after fending off all student challengers in the final volleyball event. Please see below for a full list of event winners:

ASHS Interhouse Cross Country Carnival
The Interhouse Cross Country carnival will be held at Tinaburra on Friday the 26th March (Friday, week 9), with the back up date of Tuesday 30th March (Tuesday, week 10) if required. This event will be for competitors, house captains and Recreation students only. Students can nominate directly to Ms Maryanne at C28 by Wednesday 17th March and then collect a permission form, which must be returned, by Wednesday 24th March. Races will occur between 9:30am and 1:00pm, with students returning to school for Recess 2 and Period 5. Students must arrive at school for roll marking and then catch buses to the Carnival. Student private transport is not permitted. Parents are welcome to meet the buses at the Carnival to cheer on their children. The theme for this event is house spirit, so competitors should come dressed in their best red, blue, yellow and green! Please note – full, correct school uniform will be required for the return to school. We look forward to seeing our runners in action!!
Sports Report
My name is Maryanne Cortis and I am the Sports Coordinator at Atherton State High School. I write to inform you of the process and expectations with students nominating for representative sport through Tablelands District School Sport and Peninsula Regional School Sport.
When I receive a ‘notification of trial’ via email from our Tablelands District School Sport secretary, I distribute the information via email to the appropriate groups to school email addresses, as I am required to email students to their school accounts only. Within this email, I include information such as the trial age groups and gender, date, time and location of trials, closing date for student nominations and where the forms can be collected. The sports noticeboard located at C28 and school daily notices are updated to indicate the availability of another sport trial in addition to the email. The school parades and newsletters also reflects this information where possible.
Students need to be quick with collecting, completing and returning nomination forms as sometimes there is a short turnaround time to provide the nominations to the convenor. Please note the Tablelands District School Sport and Peninsula Regional School Sport ruling of no late nominations will be accepted. Therefore I am unable to accept late nominations at a school level. Students must return forms directly to me at my office in C Block. If I am not there, I have a sign on the door notifying where I am and my expected return time. This should ensure students have the maximum opportunity to nominate for the sport they want to nominate for.
This is due to the forms no longer being printed without student details. When students collect a nomination form, they are asked if they have experience in this particular sport, especially through a club, as this is a representative sporting pathway. All forms are returned to me for checking to ensure that all necessary signatures and information is completed and, in most cases, I get the forms signed by the Principal. Any form that is not completed accurately is placed aside for the student to collect and complete. Students are notified of incomplete forms via email. I do not follow students up during class time as this causes disruption to teaching and learning. Only students whose paperwork is fully completed are nominated to the convenor. Students keen on following this representative pathway who want to ensure they are nominated can see me to check that their forms are complete and have been submitted.
Students must consider all aspects of their nomination to any representative sport commitment when nominating. Aspects to consider include being committed to the team and training times, transportation arrangements to training and games as well as school attendance and assessment responsibilities. Students who may need to withdraw without having an extenuating circumstance may not be considered for other team positions as a school representative.
If there are five or more students nominated for the trials, it is required that an adult attends as a supervisor, and in most of these cases, I will attend trials to ensure paperwork is submitted to the convenor. If we are sending a supervisor this will be communicated to the students, again via email.

Magazine of the Week
This year The Library is rebuilding our Magazine Collection. Late last year, we invested in a new magazine shelving system and selected a stack of new magazines for our readers. We are so excited to share this with our visitors! Art Corner
Senior Art students of ASHS completed a full day of art-making workshop, as part of their senior Visual Arts Program. The student responded to still life contexts and other stimuli to form the basis of their first assessment item for the year.

World’s Greatest Shave ASHS Raises $5442.77 so far!
This iconic event is one of Australia’s biggest fundraisers. With thanks to the amazing efforts of Mrs. Maryanne Cortis, Ella, Christopher, Robbie (absent from photo), Rory, and Mrs Saime Stevens our team has smashed our original goal of $5000!
World’s Greatest Shave is an annual event where family, friends, businesses and individuals come together to raise money by getting sponsored to be brave and shave their head.
At Atherton State High School we have been fundraising from the beginning of the year, with cupcakes, free dress days and the likes. This money will go to treatments, research and cures for leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders.
Our fundraising efforts of over $5400 will also go to support families when the need it the most with a free home-away-from-home near their treatment hospital.
New Library Staff
The Library love embracing new beginnings and opportunities for students and adults who generously contribute their time to a variety of projects in our school community.
This term we have two new Library cadets, Haylee Lunn (Yr.11) and Marianna Trnka (Yr.11). Both Haylee and Marianne visit every Wednesday morning and participate in various front and back-of-house tasks, assisting with collections management, display/exhibition construction and various in-house daily tasks.
We look forward to seeing Haylee and Marianne’s journey throughout the year, enhancing their capabilities in the library and providing an enjoyable and interesting way to become involved in our school community.

ASHS Free Online Library
Getting started with Sora
With Sora, you can get free ebooks and audiobooks from your school.
Step 1: Install the Sora app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, or go to soraapp.com on your computer/laptop.
Step 2: In Sora, select “Education Queensland” and then sign in using your ASHS personal user name and password.
Step 3: Browse the tab and borrow a book. Your book will open so you can start reading right away.
Step 4: Close the book and go to to see all your books (including assignments). From there, you can:
- Select Open bookor Open audiobook to read or listen to the book.
- Select Optionsto renew or return the book, see your notes and highlights, and more.

Schoolzine Newsletters
We are pleased and excited to inform you that we’ll be producing a new eNewsletter with Schoolzine. The move to this new format will enable us to communicate with the school community across multiple channels. It will promote and enhance our engagement with parents, students and the wider community.
